Yankees ace Gerrit Cole leaves the game in Texas before the 7th inning with a cramp in his right calf

ARLINGTON, Texas – New York Yankees point guard Gerrit Cole said he was not worried after leaving his start in Texas because of a cramp in his right calf.

Cole left the mound after his warm-up throws in the seventh inning of the Yankees’ 8-4 win on Monday night.

“I tried a few things to get it to stop, but it just wouldn’t stop. So it didn’t seem like it was going away,” Cole said. “I wasn’t particularly concerned. I just thought it wasn’t the right situation to keep trying to manipulate it out there.”

Before his final warm-up pitch, Cole lifted his right leg and attempted to stretch. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner bent down twice, threw the warm-up pitch, then hopped and signaled to the bench. Manager Aaron Boone and director of sports medicine Michael Shuck walked to the mound.

“Obviously there’s immediate concern. But hopefully it was just a cramp,” Boone said. “When we came in, he seemed pretty good. Hopefully that’s the case.”

Cole, who turns 34 on Sunday, said he believes that was all it was and something he only felt when he made the warm-up throws. He said he didn’t feel anything when he jogged to the mound before that inning or when he walked and moved afterward.

The Yankees announced during the game that they would continue to monitor Cole and would re-evaluate his condition on Tuesday.

He was on the 60-day injured list to begin the season after suffering nerve irritation and edema in his throwing arm during spring training, and did not make his season debut until June 19.

Cole left the game with the Yankees leading 7-1. In his six innings, he struck out nine and allowed one run while throwing 56 of 82 pitches for strikes. It was his first start of September after going 2-1 with a 1.93 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 28 innings in five starts in August. He retired the last nine Texas batters he faced.

“It’s a good sign that you’re unpredictable and putting the ball in the right place,” Cole said.

Luke Weaver took over and allowed a single to Josh Jung and a home run to Wyatt Langford.
