Yayoi Kusama delights visitors to Liverpool Street Station with her pulsating sculpture “Infinite Accumulation”

Visitors queue for hours to see one of Yayoi Kusama’s famous works. Infinity Roombut their latest London artwork can be enjoyed without long queues. Infinite accumulation was installed outside Liverpool Street Station and playfully interacts with the vibrant urban environment.

Infinite accumulation is Kusama’s first permanent public sculpture of this scale in the UK and draws on familiar motifs by reinterpreting her polka dots and daffodil balls as a series of steel spheres connected by twisting and spiralling metal wires. Situated outside the new entrance to the Elizabeth Line, the sinewy sculpture reaches a height of over 10 metres, covering an area approximately 100 metres long and reflecting the urban architecture on its surface.

The energetic piece is the final commission from the Crossrail Art Foundation’s public art programme – launched to support the construction of the new Elizabeth Line – and was jointly funded by British Land and the City of London Corporation.

“London is a huge metropolis in which people of all cultures are constantly moving,” said Kusama. “The spheres symbolize unique personalities, while the supporting curved lines allow us to imagine an underlying social structure.”
