You can rent Norman Mailer’s apartment in Brooklyn Heights

At a time when the legacies of many celebrated writers are being reexamined in the wake of their actions, Norman Mailer still stands out more than most. Much of this has to do with the fact that he stabbed his wife Adele Morales to death in 1960—though that is far from the only act of Mailer’s that seems particularly horrific today. Debates surrounding Mailer’s legacy came even more to the fore in 2022, when publisher Penguin Random House decided not to publish a posthumous collection of his writings.

Yet Mailer’s life and work are still the subject of frequent debate. And now a slightly different aspect of that legacy has returned to the spotlight: Norman Mailer’s approach to real estate. Adriane Quinlan of Curbed reports that Mailer’s former home on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade is now available for rent for the low monthly rate of $13,000.

As Quinlan writes, Mailer initially bought the entire brownstone but sold the lower floors and kept the upper floor for himself, balancing his desire to write and have a nice view with his efforts to balance his vertigo. The current owner of the space keeps the writing studio for himself but rents out the upper floor of the building. Quinlan also pointed out that a previous attempt to rent the apartment – this time for $8,500 – had a number of interested parties, which led to the price increase this time around.

The ad for Mailer’s old apartment touts the numerous amenities—it has two bedrooms, two half baths, and one full bathroom—as well as the building’s historic preservation status. And if the accompanying photos are any indication, the view is actually pretty stunning. Whether that’s enough to make up for the uglier aspects of Mailer’s own history remains to be seen—but there certainly seem to be interested parties looking to use the space.
