The City of Yuma continues its efforts to promote an updated joint land use plan with Yuma County, the City of Somerton and Marine Corps Air Station Yuma. The City will host an open house on Thursday, August 22nd from 6-8 p.m. in Room 190 of City Hall.

The purpose of this open day is to bring the public together to discuss and develop strategies in an informal and productive setting.

A short presentation will begin at 6:00 p.m., providing project updates and current conditions in the community. The public will then have the opportunity to ask questions, provide comments and suggestions, and participate in the launch of a community questionnaire.

The 1996 Joint Land Use Plan served as a guide for the sustainable development of the areas adjacent to MCAS Yuma and the Barry M. Goldwater Range with the goal of supporting the operations of the Air Force bases while allowing growth for each of the partner communities.

The effort to update the plan follows MCAS Yuma’s completion of the Air Installations Compatible Use Zones (AICUZ) study, which recommends the addition of restrictions on development throughout the community.

The Joint Land Use Plan seeks to find an acceptable solution that balances these proposed restrictions with potential expansion areas without impacting the operation of the existing runways at the base.

The 39-question questionnaire is designed to gather information on compatibility issues between MCAS training and municipal land use planning. Community responses will provide information on demographics, communications, MCAS Yuma operations, and compatibility issues. The questionnaire will be available at this link until 5:00 p.m. Thursday, September 12.

In addition, paper copies can be submitted to the following address:

“As the team completes its initial analysis, it is important that residents participate in these next steps to help shape the future growth of the community,” said Alyssa Linville, the city’s director of planning and neighborhood services.

Anyone who would like to provide comments or questions about the joint land use plan but cannot attend the open house is welcome to contact Linville at [email protected] or 928-373-5000, extension 3037.
