KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – Plans to build a gas station and restaurant in Concord Township were put on hold Wednesday following a decision by the Knox County Zoning Board of Appeals.
The BZA confirmed to 6 News that it voted to appeal the Knox County Planning Commission’s approval of a gas station to be built in the 1000 block of Concord Road on the north side of Second Drive.

According to the appeal letter, the proposed building’s footprint would exceed the maximum area allowed for the zone by 2,000 square feet, with the tank canopy and other areas not included in that 7,000 square foot measurement. The appeal also raises concerns that the building is inconsistent with the character of the neighborhood, as well as traffic and safety concerns.
The objection also specifically mentions that the petrol station will have a drive-in facility as early as 5 a.m., which will result in noise and light from vehicles in the area in the early morning hours and may affect the quality of life of local residents.

Last month, the Knox County Planning Commission approved rezoning the area for an EZ Stop gas station, restaurant and drive-thru facility. Residents told 6 News they were concerned about hearing a drive-thru arrangement while visiting the graves of loved ones nearby, and also about the safety of families out walking or children learning to ride bikes.
