Zurich Airport reports record results in the first half of 2024 thanks to strong demand in all segments

Robust financial performance

Flughafen Zürich AG generated total revenue of CHF 631.1 million in the first half of 2024, an increase of 9% compared to 2023 and 107% of revenue in the first half of 2019. Aviation revenue increased by 13% to CHF 313.5 million, while non-aviation revenue increased by 7% to CHF 317.6 million. Operating expenses increased by 12% to CHF 284.4 million.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) also increased by 7% to CHF 346.8 million, an increase of 14% compared to the first half of 2019. The positive consolidated result of CHF 151.8 million exceeds the best half-year result to date from 2019, which was CHF 143.4 million.

Passenger and freight transport

Passenger numbers continued to recover strongly. In the first half of 2024, 14.5 million passengers used Zurich Airport, an increase of 11% year-on-year and 97% of 2019 levels. On peak days, passenger numbers exceeded 100,000. The airport also handled 215,299 tonnes of cargo, an increase of 15% compared to 2023 and 95% of 2019 figures. The 2024 summer schedule included flights to 200 destinations from Zurich, served by 62 airlines.

Growth in commercial and real estate sales

The increase in passenger traffic had a positive impact on commercial revenue, which rose by 5% to CHF 133.8 million. Real estate revenue reached a new high of CHF 98.2 million, up 1% year-on-year. The Circle, Zurich Airport’s business and service centre, continued to attract successful national and international companies and recorded an occupancy rate of over 90%.

Investments and major projects

Flughafen Zürich AG invested CHF 275.4 million in the first half of 2024. Significant projects include the development of landside passenger zones and the completion of a new baggage sorting system. The airport also made progress on the preliminary project for the new Dock A, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2024, and received building permission for a key taxiway around Runway 28, which will increase safety by reducing runway crossings.

International ventures

Zurich Airport’s international business grew by 20% in the first half of 2024 and generated revenue of CHF 49 million. The most important projects include the construction of a new airport in Noida, India, and the operation of Natal Airport in Brazil. The terminal at Iquique Airport in Chile was also completed; official acceptance is expected in late summer 2024.

Outlook 2024

Zurich Airport AG expects further growth in 2024. Around 31 million passengers are expected to pass through the airport gates by the end of the year. The airport continues to focus on improving punctuality and contributing to sustainable, high-quality mobility for Switzerland through ongoing investments and innovations.
